Trainee brickies with the “X Factor” are being head-hunted for apprentice schemes which may eventually earn them £50,000-a-year.
A recruitment drive is on to find bricklayers who want to train for a construction job resulting in a £1,000-a-week salary within five years.
Housing Minister Brandon Lewis wants youngsters to show the same passion for the house-building industry just like others aspire to be pop stars.
1M HOMES BY 2020
It comes as the Prime Minister aspires to build a million new homes by 2020.
Many of the new bricky apprentices are set to form part of the proposed three million apprentice roles in the next five years.
Mr Lewis said the sector is going from “strength to strength” as the government published its Housing Bill last week.
He added: “That means there are going to be great careers out there – careers that pay well, allow you to travel, and carve out a successful life for you and your family.
“I want to see young people pick up a hammer just as much as they pick up a microphone.
“The country needs X Factor brickies, plumbers and electricians to build the homes of the future. Construction might not be as glamorous, but it’s a great career.”
Former bricklayer Ian Hodgkinson, who has recently launched a brickwork academy in Derby, said: “Young people may not realise how much they can earn as a brickie. One of our goals is to get an apprentice earning up to £1,000 per week in just five years from starting in the trade.

“The scope and scale from there is huge after that and is down them applying their skills, talent and good old hard work.”
