Turkey attempted coup: EU says measures 'unacceptable, US Turkey’s has a right and responsibility to defend themselves

The European Union says Turkey's measures against the education system, the judiciary and the media following the failed coup are "unacceptable".

In a statement, High Representative Federica Mogherini and Commissioner Johannes Hahn said they were "concerned" by Turkey's decision to declare a state of emergency.

The move gives Turkey's leaders "far reaching powers to govern by decree".

Thousands of people have been sacked or arrested following the failed coup.
The two top EU officials urged President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to respect the rule of law, rights and freedoms.

The emergency allows the president and cabinet to bypass parliament when drafting new laws and to restrict or suspend rights and freedoms.

Speaking at the presidential palace in Ankara, Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed that

"all the viruses within the armed forces will be cleansed".

Thousands of people have been arrested or sacked since the failed coup.

More than 600 schools have also been closed and thousands of state workers sacked in a crackdown by the president.

And they also warned Turkey over its decision to suspend the European Convention of Human Rights, saying it must stick to the conditions by which a suspension is permitted.

US response

QUESTION to US State Dept spokesman
MR KIRBY : You mentioned that Secretary Kerry will be at the Warsaw NATO summit, and Turkish President Erdogan is also going, and he said that his main objective will be to get the other countries there to understand that the PKK and the Syrian PYG and PYD are terrorists on the same level as Daesh. What will be the – do you know what the U.S. response will be specifically as regards the Syrian groups? And if you don’t agree with that, will there be an attempt to actively rebut the Turkish position?

MR KIRBY : Well, let’s not get ahead of conversations that haven’t happened yet, okay? I don’t want to preordain discussions in Warsaw. We continue to hold the PKK as a terrorist group. They are an FTO. They’re designated as a terrorist group. As I said yesterday, we recognize Turkey’s right and responsibility to defend themselves and their citizens, their borders from acts of terrorism. We also continue to urge the PKK to cease the acts of violence and to return to a negotiating table. And nothing’s changed about – nothing’s changed about our view in that regard.

QUESTION: I understand that, but with the PYG and the PYD the U.S. has a different position than Turkey, and I wondered if it was going to be assertive – going to assert its position against Erdogan’s.

MR KIRBY: Our views of the YPD and PYG have not changed.

QUESTION: That they’re not terrorist organizations.

MR KIRBY: They are not designated as terrorist organization
