Estate agent Sterling Estates fined for illegal display board on Common Lane, Kings Langley by Dacorum City Council

An estate agent has been prosecuted for the illegal display of one of its boards on a telegraph pole

Sterling Estates, which has offices in Hemel Hempstead, Berkhamsted and Tring, was handed an £800 fine and ordered to pay Dacorum Borough Council.[ DBC]

“Dacorum Borough Council will not allow companies or individuals to colonise, the borough’s public spaces for private gain. This includes estate agents.

We have successfully secured a conviction, against Sterling estate agents (offices in Hemel Hempstead, Berkhamsted and Tring) for the illegal display, of an estate agent's board.

The defendant pleaded guilty at St Albans Magistrates' Court on Tuesday 2nd February, to the placing of an unlawful board, on a telegraph pole at Common Lane, Kings Langley.

The board was not displayed on land, or property for sale and it was not therefore, apparent to which property, the board related.

The defendant was issued an £800 fine and ordered to pay DBC costs (£780) and a victim surcharge (£80).

Our Development Control Committee, gave officers authority to start legal proceedings ,against Sterling on 26 November 2015. The prosecution followed several warnings, to the company about placement of its boards.

Philip Stanley, Planning Specialist Services Team Leader, said, “Unlawfully sited estate agents’ boards are misleading, unsightly and can be visually distracting to motorists. We will not allow companies or individuals to colonise the borough’s public spaces for private gain. This includes estate agents, and we will not hesitate to take appropriate action.

"As the local planning authority, we must ensure that the regulations in place to maintain our borough are followed. We will take appropriate action against illegal advertising, including prosecuting those who unlawfully site advertising boards and compromise the appearance of our borough."

“If you are unsure whether you need consent from the council for a particular sign or banner, email

planning.enforcement@dacorum.gov.uk or
call 01442 228000.”
