Every cloud has a silver lining - Weather Channel could be a very savi buy for a smart tech company

Hot Property > Weather Channel up for sale > tech companies could add millions literally

In an interview, Weather Co. Chief Executive David Kenny said the company has been aggressively diversifying into digital advertising and B2B services so it isn’t so reliant on TV. Those areas combined have already passed TV revenue, he said.

up for grabs weather channel selling off digital arm ,to monetise, the success of the company’s mobile app.

This comes after Verizon FiOS  dropped The Weather Channel and its sister network Weatherscan from its lineup at 12:00 a.m. Eastern Time on March 10, 2015 after the two parties were unable to come to terms on a new carriage agreement. The services have respectively been replaced by the AccuWeather Network (which launched on March 13) and a widget provided by FiOS featuring forecast content provided by WeatherBug. No public announcement was made regarding the removal until over 12 hours after TWC and Weatherscan were pulled. The Weather Channel offered a less expensive deal to Verizon FiOS, which rejected the offer. Verizon cited the wide availability of the internet and mobile apps for consumers to access weather content any time of day as the reason for dropping TWC and its services

The Weather Channel’s mobile app has regularly been one of the highest downloaded  apps globally on Apple’s iPhone and iPad devices as well as googleplay apps with a staggering  50,000,000 - 100,000,000 installs  because of the general publics  obsession with the climate.

The most likely buyer for the digital business is a tech company, said people informed about the negotiations.

"The number of eyeballs the app gets is phenomenal . we are talking millions,” said a person close to the company.
Bloomberg first reported news about a potential sale of the digital business.
