Turkish military Coup failure , coup d'état to depose Erdogan Government over

Turkey's military said on Friday it had seized power but conversational President Tayyip Erdogan vowed that the attempted coup would be put down.

If it had been successful, the overthrow of Erdogan, who has ruled Turkey since 2003, would have been the biggest shifts in the Middle East in years, transforming one of the most important U.S. allies in the region while war rages on its border.

"We will overcome this," Erdogan said, speaking on a video call to a mobile phone held up to the camera by an announcer on the Turkish sister station of CNN. He called on his followers to take to the streets to defend his government and said the coup plotters would pay a heavy price.

Boris Johnson UK Foreign Secretary called for calm and to respect the democratically elected Erdogan Government Earlier today

An official said Erdogan was speaking from Marmaris on the Turkish coast where he was on holiday. Erdogan said he would swiftly return to Ankara.

Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said the elected government remained in office. However, it appeared that those behind the coup had the upper hand initially.

Airports were shut, access to Internet social media sites was cut off, and troops sealed off the two bridges over the Bosphorus in Istanbul, one of which was still lit up red, white and blue in solidarity with victims of the Bastille Day truck attack in France a day earlier.

Warplanes and helicopters roared over the capital Ankara. An explosion was heard in Ankara, where a helicopter opened fire.

Soldiers took control of TRT state television, which announced a countrywide curfew and martial law. An announcer read a statement on the orders of the military that accused the government of eroding the democratic and secular rule of law. The country would be run by a "peace council" that would ensure the safety of the population, the statement said.

TRT later went off the air.

The state-run Anadolu news agency said the chief of Turkey's military staff was among people taken "hostage" in the capital Ankara. CNN Turk also reported that hostages were being held at the military headquarters.

In the US, the iPhone reigns supreme by a wide margin in the smartphone market.

President Erdogan flew back into Istanbul after the Turkish military coup to overthrow him had failed.

The president made a triumphant return to the city having flown to Istanbul on board the government Gulfstream IV jet to Ataturk airport, which had earlier been seized by members of the military.

Addressing his supporters, Erdogan claimed the five-hour coup was organised in Pennsylvania.

He said the hotel on the Aegean coast where he was on holiday at the start of the coup was bombed moments after he left.

The Turkish Chief of Army is reportedly being held in prison reports state media.
So far, 120 connected to the attempted coup have been arrested.

Controversal secular goverment

Past controversies of Erdogan as a leader include ,1,863 Turkish journalists fired during AKP rule, and  anti antisemitism  During the campaign for the Turkish elections in June 2015, Erdoğan accused The New York Times of being represented by "Jewish capital" after foreign media outlets expressed concern over the corrosion of freedom of expression in Turkey.

who is behind the Coup?

Supposedly an influential Muslim cleric who lives quietly on a gated 26-acre compound in the Pocono Mountains, where he prays, works, meets admirers and watches from afar as terrorism accusations that have landed him on Turkey's most-wanted list unfold in court.

Rarely seen in public, known as Fethullah Gulen [pictured above ]has long been one of Turkey's most important scholars, with multitudes of followers in his native country and around the world. More recently, Turkey's increasingly autocratic president, Recep Erdogan, has accused Gulen of plotting to overthrow the officially secular government from his Pennsylvania idyll [pictured below] some 5,000 miles away previously also.

The U.S. has shown little inclination to send Gulen back to Turkey. The Justice Department has declined to comment on Gulen's case. In an interview with the AP early this year, Aslandogan, of the Alliance for Shared Values, said: "(Gulen) said that the United States has a long tradition of democracy and rule of law. ... They will see that these are politically oriented charges, and they will not allow Erdogan to spread his ambition into the United States."

The AKP has itself provoked a number of coups or attempts in Turkish history. And in many respects, Friday night looked to be another event in that tradition: a military coup driven from within Turkey’s armed forces. By Saturday morning Erdoğan had reasserted power and it was announced dozens of senior colonels and generals had been removed.

However, in a statement, Mr Gulen rejected any suggestion he had links to the events, saying he condemned "in the strongest terms, the attempted military coup in Turkey".

The White House said Obama and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry spoke on the phone and "agreed that all parties in Turkey should support the democratically-elected Government of Turkey, show restraint, and avoid any violence or bloodshed."

Kerry "underscored that the State Department will continue to focus on the safety and security of U.S. citizens in Turkey."

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appealed for calm in Turkey on Friday as the world body sought to clarify the situation in the country, said a U.N. spokesman.

"The Secretary-General is closely following developments in Turkey. He is aware of the reports of a coup attempt in the country. The United Nations is seeking to clarify the situation on the ground and appeals for calm," said spokesman Farhan Haq.
